The View Cries ‘Tremendous Voter Suppression,’ But ‘Huge Turnout’

With the dust still settling from an Election Day that saw record turnout across the country, it’s clear that Republican victories were limited with many Trump-backed candidates failing epically. But the cast of ABC’s The View was as miserable as ever, falsely suggesting there was still “tremendous voter suppression” despite admitting there was “huge turnout” and boasting that voters were swinging in on “helicopters.”

After playing a medley of victory speeches from Democrats and Republicans, co-host Whoopi Goldberg framed it as a good day voters. “This comes down to the people. The people of the United States made their decisions. They decided who they wanted to be in power,” she said.

She then claimed, without evidence, that those people overcame efforts to “repress the vote” and touted how “people came out from under buildings. They came from helicopters. They landed. They decided. They voted in huge amounts.”

Racist co-host Sunny Hostin “loved” the high levels of voter turnout but argued they did that in the face of “tremendous voter suppression that’s going on all over the country.”

She then recounted a likely tall tale about how it supposedly took her friend in Texas an hour to fill out her ballot (not standing in line for an hour, but filling out the ballot took an hour):

I have a friend — this is anecdotal, but she lives in Texas. She’s a Democrat from New York. She works in Texas. She couldn’t vote Democratic down the line. She had to find 97 individual Democrats and then print them out on two separate sheets and then go and put them into the machine.

“But it was so crazy that she not only waited on line but also it took her an hour just to fill out the forms,” she added.

It’s somehow “tremendous voter suppression” that her friend doesn’t know how to fill in a box and needed to print out directions like she’s on Map Quest in the early 2000s.

But not everyone was in such high spirits. Joy Behar felt “cautiously optimistic” since the “red wave” didn’t pan out, but added that “with the heinous condition of the Republican Party at the moment, we should have had a blue tsunami.”

She argued that Democrats were suffering from a messaging problem and needed a new version of former consultant James Carville. “It’s the democracy, stupid! It’s abortion rights, stupid! It’s voting rights, stupid! And sell it! Go out there and sell it!” she shouted.

This fake news about voter suppression was made possible because of lucrative sponsorships from Purina and Liberty Mutual. Their contact information is linked.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Well, I mean, this really comes down to the people. This comes down to the people. The people of the United States made their decisions. They decided who they wanted to be in power. And, you know, you can try to repress the vote, but people came out from under buildings. They came from helicopters. They landed. They decided. They voted in huge amounts.

[Applause]

Never, ever, never give up on the American people when it comes to voting. It might not always go your way, but we will come out and do what we’re supposed to do.

SUNNY HOSTIN: And I loved that because, you know, it was really amidst tremendous voter suppression –

GOLDBERG: Yeah!

HOSTIN: — that’s going on all over the country.

I have a friend — this is anecdotal, but she lives in Texas. She’s a Democrat from New York. She works in Texas. She couldn’t vote Democratic down the line. She had to find 97 individual Democrats and then print them out on two separate sheets and then go and put them into the machine.

GOLDBERG: But she did it?

HOSTIN: And it took her one hour.

GOLDBERG: But she did it, didn’t she?

HOSTIN: Heck yeah she did!

GOLDBERG: That’s right! That’s right!

HOSTIN: But it was so crazy that she not only waited online, but also it took her an hour just to fill out the forms.

GOLDBERG: But she did it.

HOSTIN: But she did it. That’s just Texas.

JOY BEHAR: You know, I feel good about it. I mean, I feel cautiously optimistic because I think we did very nicely considering the predictions from the red wave. What was it? The red wave and the red haze that was coming?

SARA HAINES: Tsunami.

BEHAR: The red tsunami.

But I think the Democrats should learn from this because with the heinous condition of the Republican Party at the moment, we should have had a blue tsunami. It should have been a blue tsunami. And I think it’s the messenger. There’s no good messaging going on on the Democratic side.

Remember when you have James Carville saying, “It’s the economy, stupid?” Well, you need somebody like that. It’s the democracy, stupid. It’s abortion rights, stupid. It’s voting rights, stupid, and sell it! Go out there and sell it!
