Elon Musk is, of course, right when he says that there is only one reason to oppose Voter ID, and that is to cheat in elections.
I’ve heard countless reasons advanced for why asking people to present ID in order to exercise the franchise is horrible and oppressive, but they are all a distraction from this basic fact. My favorite, of course, is the racist claim that black people are far too stupid to be able to get an ID card, or that poor people cannot afford them. The first claim is ridiculous and offensive, the second somehow is never refuted even when proponents offer to visit people in their homes to issue free IDs.
The only reason to ban voter ID is to commit voting fraud.
