A week ago, US Border Patrol Agent David Maland was killed in a shootout in rural Vermont. At first, everyone assumed that he had intercepted illegals or smugglers and that the encounter had gone deadly. One of the assailants was Felix Bauckholt, a German national with an expired visa. Bauckholt apparently had a genius-level IQ and a very lucrative job at Tower Research Capital, the high-frequency trading firm, though the expired visa makes it seem like he’d been fired. He was killed in the shootout. Bauckholt’s partner, a 21-year-old woman from Washington State named Teresa Youngblut. She was wounded in the shootout and was charged on Friday with complicity in the killing.
