‘Been There, Don That’: NY Post Hides Trump’s ‘Big Announcement’ On Page 26

The New York Post took a swipe at former President Donald Trump after he announced his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination on Tuesday, burying the story on page 26 of Wednesday’s newsstand edition and including just a generic tagline on the cover.

The Post’s cover story was about the city’s attempts to crack down on gang activity — and the takedown of a gang member who allegedly shot a three-year-old — and featured a photo of what appeared to be a toddler’s shirt covered in blood. One line across the bottom of the cover referenced the former president’s Mar-a-Lago to-do: “Florida Man Makes Announcement, page 26.”

The story on Page 26, headlined “Been There, Don That,” gave a tongue-in-cheek and less-than-impressed review of the affair.

“With just 720 days to go before the next election, a Florida retiree made the surprise announcement Tuesday night that he was running for president,” the text of the article read. “In a move no political pundit saw coming, avid golfer Donald J. Trump kicked things off at Mar-a-Lago, his resort and classified-documents library.”

“Trump, famous for gold-plated lobbies and for firing people on reality television, will be 78 in 2024. If elected, Trump would tie Joe Biden as the oldest president to take office. His cholesterol levels are unknown, but his favorite food is a charred steak with ketchup. He has stated that his qualifications for office include being a ‘stable genius,’” the story concluded. “Trump also served as the 45th president.”

The New York Post, according to Grabien founder Tom S. Elliott, was apparently “not interested in Season 2” of the Trump presidency.

“The Post, like the rest of us, is tired of the lazy sequels,” Tiana Lowe agreed.

While plenty of supporters have said they would like to see the former president run again in 2024 — and a number turned up at his Mar-a-Lago estate to witness the announcement in person — there were some, including Trump’s own former Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, who argued that he should have waited to officially make his bid until after the December 6 run-off in Georgia decided the balance of the U.S. Senate.

Former Arkansas Republican Governor Mike Huckabee said that Trump’s speech hit the mark, however, praising him for striking the right tone and encouraging people to get out and vote for Walker in Georgia.

“Trump got his mojo back 2nite,” Huckabee tweeted. “I was apprehensive he’d announce while GA Senate race in play, but he urged ppl to go vote for @HerschelWalker & Trump speech was pitch perfect — he focused on the American ppl and the future, not the past. If he stays on this path, he’s unbeatable.”
