Editor’s Note: On Sunday, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that he is “bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes” and that he is saving the legacy of the famed explorer from the “ashes.”
In 2021, then-President Joe Biden became the first president to make an official statement celebrating “Indigenous Peoples Day,” a holiday created in part to replace and rebuke Columbus Day.
“Today, we also acknowledge the painful history of wrongs and atrocities that many European explorers inflicted on tribal nations and indigenous communities,” Biden said in his statement.
