The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in federal documents. The vote was 211-to-206. No Democrats voted for the bill, and one Republican voted against the bill. Sixteen members did not vote. The bill will now be sent to the Senate for consideration.
The Gulf of America Act of 2025 was sponsored by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and co-sponsored by 17 other House Republicans.
The legislation would codify Executive Order 14172 by President Donald Trump, which directed the secretary of the interior to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in the Geographic Names Information System.
