Russian President Vladimir Putin and his top military official denied reports this week that Russia is looking to create a nuclear weapon designed to be used in space.
The remarks come after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH) brought attention to the matter last week by warning that a foreign adversary was working on creating a “destabilizing” weapon and urged President Joe Biden to declassify the intelligence surrounding the weapon. Subsequent reporting said that the potential weapon would be used to knock out satellites critical to U.S. national security.
“Our position is clear and transparent: We have always been categorically against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space and we are still against it,” Putin claimed.
