Liz Truss Becomes Shortest-Serving Prime Minister in UK History. Twitter Erupts.

Liz Truss has resigned, just six weeks after she was appointed prime minister of the United Kingdom.

“I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party,” Truss said Thursday morning, standing outside 10 Downing Street, the prime minister’s residence, in London. “I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”

The prime minister’s resignation comes after weeks of criticism from her opponents and even members of her own party. Truss will likely be remembered as serving the shortest term as prime minister in U.K. history.

“Liz Truss’s resignation and disastrously short tenure is a lesson for all conservatives to never surrender to the Left,” Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation, said in a statement.  (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)

Truss backtracked on a series of tax cuts, which according to Gardiner was a concession to the political Left in the U.K. He said this ultimately weakened her position.

We have witnessed a brutal coup inside the British Conservative Party.
A huge mistake by Liz Truss to U-turn and make concessions to the Tory Left, as well as to bow to attacks from the IMF and Joe Biden.

Gardiner said Truss’ failure as prime minister has placed Brexit at risk of failure.

In the face of mounting opposition, including attacks from the [International Monetary Fund] and President Biden, she failed to stand her ground, and now her own party and Brexit itself are in peril.

Liberal elites within the Conservative Party and the Westminster establishment are undermining the will of the British people. Britain’s next Conservative government must focus on securing the future of Brexit and British prosperity, by advancing economic liberty, protecting Britain’s borders, and standing up to the [European Union].

President Joe Biden thanked Truss on Twitter for her “partnership on a range of issues, including holding Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine.”

Biden promised America will “continue our close cooperation with the U.K. government as we work together to meet the global challenges our nations face.”

I thank Prime Minister Liz Truss for her partnership on a range of issues including holding Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine.

We will continue our close cooperation with the U.K. government as we work together to meet the global challenges our nations face.

Other foreign-policy experts, politicians, and political voices spoke out on the news in the hours after Truss’ resignation announcement.

Liz Truss’ miniscule stint as PM should teach all of us one very important thing: systemic economic problems created by out-of-control spending over the course of decades are going to claim a lot of scalps and create a lot of volatility across the West in coming years.

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 20, 2022

The debacle of Liz Truss’ short-lived premiership is a symptom of a broken economic system and a trashed democracy.

We will continue to lurch from crisis to crisis — and ordinary people will pay the price — until we finally build a society for the many, not the few.

It’s over. Liz Truss is resigning and will become shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history. What an absolute shambles.

Liz Truss has become the shortest serving prime minister in history, beating previous record holder George Canning who *died of tuberculosis* 119 days into the job

Some political voices used sarcasm to mark the historic nature of Truss’ short tenure.

Hi @trussliz! You may have just humiliated yourself in front of the entire world in 44 days but the good news is there is a 60 day guarantee from https://t.co/gJtTBASKJm with promocode Poso – A Made in Britain success! (unlike you) Enjoy with a refreshing bite of lettuce!

A British newspaper has started a live stream on YouTube of Liz Truss’s photo next to a lettuce to see which one lasts longer. I do love this country’s sense of humo(u)r. pic.twitter.com/nVpbozX3OP

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Truss’ predecessor, is expected to run in the Tory leadership race to replace Truss. Truss will remain in power until a successor is chosen.

There will be a leadership election to be completed in the next week.

This will ensure we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security.

I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen.
