It’s official: House Republicans on Tuesday afternoon delivered two articles of impeachment to the Senate against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his abject failure to secure the southern border.
Next comes a trial in the Senate, but the Democrat-controlled body is expected to quickly dismiss the charges at the behest of Majority Leader Chuck Schumer or put on a speedy show trial. If the charges are not dismissed outright, Senate jurors could be seated as soon as Wednesday.
Mayorkas is the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached in nearly 150 years. House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas in February after failing to do so on their first try.
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted the delivery to social media, adding that Mayorkas is “derelict of his duty”:
