If you are younger than my current age of 57 years, you are probably guessing this is going to be a post about skyrocketing food prices. But if you’re my age or older, you are probably bracing for a reference to Alice’s Restaurant Massacree, and thinking to yourself, it’s not remotely close to Thanksgiving, yet. It’s too soon.
To catch up the younger readers on context, Alice’s Restaurant is the signature “song” of Arlo Guthrie. I say song, but it’s really more of a 18-minute long story narrated to an acoustic guitar riff, with a 30-second chorus at the end. It’s about a young man at Thanksgiving dinner who loaded up his Volkswagen Microbus with bags of garbage after the meal and snuck off to illegally dump it, only to have the shame of littering follow him around for the rest of his life.
