When I was a not-so-young Second Lieutenant (not so young because of prior enlisted time) in my first unit, I had an office I shared with my platoon sergeant; we had two big gray, steel government desks that faced each other. This being some years ago, we each had an ashtray, we each had a blotter, I had a copy of “Murphy’s Laws of Combat” hanging on the wall and we each had two baskets for paperwork, marked “IN” and “OUT.”
After a few weeks, I decided we needed a third basket, which I obtained from Supply. The third basket was for crap that I didn’t want to deal with right away for one reason or another, and it was marked “TOO HARD.” It drew a few narrowed gazes from my company commander, as well as the battalion commander, but I guess I was doing a good enough job otherwise to get away with it.
That last sentence pretty much sums up my military career.
