The competition just got bricked. “A Minecraft Movie” took the top spot at the box office this weekend, grossing $163 million domestically for the biggest opening weekend of the year.
Industry analysts originally predicted an opening closer to $60 million after mixed reviews on the trailer, per Variety. But that was adjusted to $90 million as the film’s premiere drew closer. The video game based story also earned an additional $150 million worldwide for a grand total of $313 million against a $150 million production budget, not counting marketing expenses.
Before “Minecraft” dropped, the Disney/Marvel film “Captain America: Brave New World” held the record for biggest opening of 2025 with $88 million. As for the best performing video game adaptation, that title was held by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023) which raked in $146 million during its opening weekend.
