Beyonce’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Still Isn’t Country, Despite AMA Awards

In Las Vegas on Monday, the American Music Awards held its annual ceremony and presented its trophies, but to paraphrase Sin City’s tourism slogan: “What happened in Vegas should stay in Vegas.” 

Following the lead of the Grammys back in February, the AMAs treated Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” album as though it were country music—which it isn’t—and handed her trophies for favorite female country artist and favorite country album.

Apparently, the AMAs, like the Grammys, didn’t get the memo from the Country Music Association and rival Academy of Country Music, both of which rightly snubbed Beyonce and “Cowboy Carter” in their respective annual awards galas in November and on May 8, respectively. Beyonce is many things, but a country singer isn’t one of them, and “Cowboy Carter” is anything but genuine country music—and it isn’t somehow…
