Have you ever thought about how scary it is that we are moving toward a world where artificial gestation is a reality?
Over the summer, it was reported that scientists successfully raised a lamb for four weeks in a synthetic womb. This was billed as a great success and tremendous news for women.
Some people actually believe synthetic wombs can replace women and that women won’t need to give birth in the future. “You know, we don’t even need women and women, this capability of giving birth, who cares about that?” Leftists will argue. “That’s not what makes you a woman, anyway.”
Obviously, the rebuttal is that the most important difference between men and women is that a woman is able to bring life into the world and that babies grow within our wombs. Men — again, obviously — are not able to do that within their own bodies.
Well, what would that argument look like if we had a technological advancement where a machine could just create and support life, eliminating the need for women?
The article also predicts that “women who are infertile for medical or social reasons, that means may be able to conceive with the help of this emerging reproductive technology.”
And then I think about how we are seeing just an explosion of women who are struggling with fertility — for a variety of reasons. Fertility has decreased for the past 70 years. I know many young women who are trying to have children for the first time, but have issues and they’re suffering from tremendous amounts of miscarriages.
So I always have a lingering question about whether or not Big Pharma is actually trying to create a circumstance in which women are unable to have children naturally.
There is something incredibly dystopian about all of this.
It’s a nightmare, actually, because the first thing that really comes to my head is that eventually, we could be in a circumstance similar to China’s previous one-child policy. They no longer have it, but from 1980 to 2016 the Chinese Communist Party ruled that all Chinese parents must only have one child.
Well, what happens if the government determines whether or not you could have children full stop? What if authorities started determining that women were not able to have children, but that you had to come to the government and ask them if you could have a child and use their artificial womb?
All of this might sound like a nightmare that could never plausibly happen. I promise you it can.
The first place I can see this happening is China — without question.
Right now, China is facing a shortage of women because billions of Chinese citizens decided they wanted to raise boys — not girls — under the one-child policy. It should be noted that as a consequence of that shortage of women, women and girls are being sex trafficked into China from North Korea.
The reason this is going on is because of poor government policies — like the one-child policy.
And when there are poor government policies that have bad results, what typically then happens is that more poor government policies are produced in their place to fix them.
So this entire concept makes me extremely uncomfortable. I mean, extremely uncomfortable.
