Numerous Hollywood figures responded to the unexpected passing of rapper Coolio on Wednesday afternoon by posting positive things about him online.
TMZ reported that the rapper, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr., died while visiting a friend. He reportedly went to use the bathroom at his friend’s house and did not come back for a while, prompting the friend to go looking for him. The friend found him lying on the floor, at which point he called for help.
The rapper was pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement sources told the publication that they opened a death investigation but no foul play was suspected and no drugs or drug paraphernalia were found at the scene.
Authorities said that an autopsy and toxicology test would be needed to determine a cause of death although initial indications pointed to possible cardiac arrest.
Numerous rappers, other musicians, and actors responded to Coolio’s passing with statements on social media.
“Coolio was the West Coast Flavor Flav,” Public Enemy co-founder Flavor Flav tweeted. “He loved telling everyone that. We was supposed to perform together this Tuesday. #RIP my friend.”
“This is sad news,” Ice Cube tweeted. “I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry. Rest In Peace @Coolio.”
Actor Rob Schneider responded: “Rest In Peace Coolio! A true legend and nice man. My heart goes out to your family and friends. So glad we got to hang and have some laughs.”
“Heartbroken to hear of the passing of the gifted artist @coolio. A life cut entirely too short,” actress Michelle Pfeiffer posted on Instagram. “As some of you may know I was lucky enough to work with him on Dangerous Minds in 1995. He won a Grammy for his brilliant song on the soundtrack – which I think was the reason our film saw so much success. I remember him being nothing but gracious. 30 years later I still get chills when I hear the song. Sending love and light to his family. Rest in Power, Artis Leon Ivey Jr.”
