The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has a very long and proud history of being the largest sheriff’s department in the country and the third largest municipal police agency in the country, behind the NYPD and the Chicago Police Department. Founded in 1850, the department had one sheriff and two deputies; the department now boasts approximately 8,815 deputies and Sheriff Robert Luna in command.
