Majority Of Americans Want Fewer Immigrants, Poll Finds

A majority of Americans want to curtail immigration into the United States for the first time since 2005, according to a new poll from Gallup.

The survey found that 55% of American adults want fewer immigrants to come to the country, while 41% said that they want immigration to remain at its present levels or would like to allow even more migrants to relocate here. This is the largest percentage of Americans who want immigration cut since 2001, when 58% favored fewer noncitizens.

While 25% of those polled said they want immigration to remain at its current level, 16% said they would like more immigrants to come to the U.S. The figure marks a drastic drop from May 2020, when 34% of respondents said that immigration should be increased.
