Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was photographed grabbing some takeout at a high-end Sushi restaurant in Washington, D.C. — hours after visiting storm-ravaged North Carolina.
The incident continues a disturbing trend of extremely out-of-touch behavior in the wake of natural disasters Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The storms have resulted in hundreds of lives lost and, in the case of Helene, left countless individuals missing even to this day.
Mayorkas, the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached in 150 years, announced that he had touched down in the Tar Heel State on X, just after 10 AM on Thursday.
He declared that he would be “speaking firsthand” with FEMA officials about “our relief and recovery efforts in the state following #Helene’s damage and devastation.”
