Remember Andrew Yang, the lawyer/entrepreneur Democrat who came out of nowhere to become a player in the 2020 race for the Democratic presidential nomination? His signature proposal was a universal basic income, which he called a “Freedom Dividend.”
He was described in the media at the time as a “dark horse” and a “novelty candidate,” but then his popularity grew during the debates and he even attracted fervent fans, known as the “Yang Gang.”
He didn’t win the nomination, but afterward changed his affiliation to independent and went on to found the political action committee Forward Party in 2021, which is billed as an alternative to the two major parties. He can frequently be found opining on CNN.
