‘Some Speech Is Not Okay Free Speech’: Whoopi Loses It Over Elon Musk, Vows To Quit Twitter

Whoopi Goldberg went off the rails during Monday’s broadcast of “The View,” vowing to leave Twitter because Elon Musk has refused to continue to censor the voices she would rather not be exposed to on the platform.

Goldberg joined her co-hosts on the ABC midday talk show to discuss the state of Twitter after one week with Musk at the helm — and she complained that the same free speech protections she enjoys should not be available to just anyone.

“It has been a little over a week since Elon Musk took over Twitter, and the place is a — it’s a mess,” Goldberg began, noting that Musk had already called back some of the workers he fired just last week.

“He’s putting his $8 charge for blue-check verification on hold. First it was going to be $20, now it’s going to be $8. He also suspended Kathy Griffin for impersonating him on a parody account,” Goldberg said, despite the fact that Griffin had changed the name and photo on her official, verified account — which was not labeled a parody — to Musk prior to the suspension.

“I’m getting off, I’m getting off today,” Goldberg continued, complaining that “certain kinds of attitudes” that had been blocked in the past were back on the platform.

Co-host Ana Navarro followed Goldberg with a plea for the federal government to address social media standards and force platforms to “combat misinformation” and share details regarding how they might “amplify divisive comments.”

Co-host Sunny Hostin referred to Twitter as a “hellscape,” complaining without evidence that the platform would no longer be usable as a vehicle to connect people with resources and valuable information. She then called for Democrats to get rid of Section 230 so that Twitter — and Musk — could be held liable for what was said on the platform.

“They keep saying that it’s free speech,” Goldberg jumped back in, adding, “And some speech is not — all — all speech is not free speech! Some speech is not okay free speech! So everybody has to agree on that, but if people keep saying, ‘Well, you’re hurting my free speech,’ it’s going to be a problem. But you know what? This is going to be — this is our problem. But it ain’t my problem today, because I’m out.”
