‘The Color Purple’ Actress Cries While Claiming She’s Underpaid In Hollywood: ‘The Math Ain’t Mathing’

“The Color Purple” actress Taraji P. Henson broke down in tears while discussing what she believes is significant pay inequality in Hollywood.

The 53-year-old made the remarks during an interview with Gayle King for Sirius XM Radio after being asked about rumors that she planned to quit the business. She told King and the two other guests, Danielle Brooks and Blitz Bazawule, that she’s “tired of working so hard” and “getting paid a fraction of the cost.”

“I’m tired of hearing my sisters saying the same thing over and over,” Henson said, seeming to indicate that black actresses were not being paid enough. “I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ I have to. The math ain’t mathing.”

The “Empire” star said that many entertainers have a team to support, and that should be considered when negotiating deals.
