ABC’s “The View” got slammed after a segment on Monday showing children in Halloween costumes with one young child dressed all in gold as an Oscar with a red painted handprint across the face memorializing actor Will Smith’s attack on comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards.
“This year, the Oscars made huge headlines, but it really, it wasn’t about who won, it was about what happened with Best Actor Will Smith when he went up and slapped Chris Rock,” intoned Ashley Alderfer Kaufman, wardrobe supervisor for the show.
“Now we do not want to endorse violence of any kind but we couldn’t help but talk about one of the hottest hot topics of the year,” she continued. “’So we have our interpretation, we have an Oscar statue, we call this the Oscars slap. He has a red facepaint on the statue.”

The first costume at which the hosts cackled in laughter was a young boy with a blonde wig dressed as former President Trump who was attached to a toilet with “Top-Secret” documents attached to it. He was accompanied by two children dressed as FBI agents.
“One of the hugest (sic) topics you guys talked about this year: the raid on Trump’s Mar-A-Lago, estate” Kaufman enthused. “The top secret documents, what did he do? He flushed them down the toilet,” she chortled. “So we have Trump as a toilet with our FBI agents.”
Various social media users bashed “The View” for the Oscar costume with comments such as these:
“Not a fan of that Oscar slap costume.”
“The Oscar Slap? Really?”
“I know they not about to talk about this Oscars slap again.”
“The Oscar Slap for a hot topic for Halloween on the view? Next time just pass on this suggestion! Otherwise great Halloween costumes!”
“Bad taste on the Oscar slap. You did validate violence Ashley.”
“Difficult to keep up with everything but the red handprint on one’s face is the symbol for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Too bad no one was able to flag this costume idea in advance.”
“What was that Chris Rock costume??? ‘I don’t want to endorse violence but here’s a costume endorsing violence.’ DO BETTER!!”
After Smith’s slap at the Oscars, “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg opined, ““I think he overreacted. I think he had one of those moments where it was like [godd*** it], just stop. I get it, not everybody acts the way we would like them to act under pressure. And he snapped.”
