Top House Oversight Dem Won’t Seek Re-Election After Cancer Resurgence

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the top Democrat on the powerful House Oversight Committee, announced on Monday that his cancer has “returned” and he will not seek re-election next year.

Connolly, 75, first revealed in November, right after the 2024 election, that he had cancer of the esophagus with no symptoms aside from some “intermittent” abdominal aches and pains. At the time, he pledged to keep working while undergoing treatment.

“When I announced my diagnosis six months ago, I promised transparency,” Connolly said. “After grueling treatments, we’ve learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned. I’ll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace.”
