‘We Don’t Need Them For Anything’

President Donald Trump defended his decision to impose a 25% tariff on Canada, telling reporters in the Oval Office on Monday that the U.S. doesn’t “need” Canadian exports.

The White House announced on Saturday that Canada, Mexico, and China would all be hit with tariffs to “hold” the countries “accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country.” On Monday, Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum negotiated a deal to pause the tariff on Mexico for one month in return for Sheinbaum sending 10,000 National Guard troops to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump is also set to talk with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday afternoon.

During a Q&A with reporters inside the Oval Office, Trump reiterated his desire to see “Canada become the 51st state.”
