Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) said during an interview over the weekend that China would be misreading the room if it took what happened between President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday as a green light for it to invade Taiwan.
Lankford made the remark during a Sunday interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” with Kristen Welker while recapping the Oval Office spat between the two world leaders.
“If China somehow receives that, they’re receiving the exact wrong message that the United States stands with our ally Taiwan, and we, like the rest of the world, want to see peace in that region and to continue to be able to have relationships all across that region,” he said. “But China should not misread this at all. What President Trump is trying to do is trying to get both sides to the table.”
